Je suis………………..

……………………………Lumiere. Je suis triste parce que je voulais Belle, mais j’irai essayer être bonne à Lumiere.

Life is about disappointments and rising above them. After all no one gets everything that they want. Sometimes you simply just have to make the most of what you are dealt, which I will try to do. My goal is to be the best Lumiere there ever was!

For those who are completely lost about this post, here is the explanation: my middle school is putting on the Disney musical Beauty and the Beast. Today the cast list was posted. I was cast as Lumière . For those who are not familiar with the story or Disney movie, Lumiere is the talking candlestick pictured in the photo below with the talking clock, Cogsworth. Yes, that’s me.

Have you ever participated in any school plays?

Have you ever had a disappointment from which you have recovered?

Have you ever been a candlestick?

    My dear Meredith,

While I can completely commiserate about disappointment, I appreciate your goal to be the best Lumiere that ever was (and I have no doubt that you will be!) Watch out Broadway, here she comes!

Here’s a little story of disappointment and how I recovered:

My senior year of high school, we did the musical “Fiddler on the Roof”. I absolutely had my heart set on playing the part of Tzeitle (please forgive the spelling!), who was the oldest daughter of Tevye. She had the song “Matchmaker” among another one. I wanted more than anything to have my moment to be in the limelight and show my community why I was heading off to music school.

After the audition, the cast list was posted, and I was cast as Yente, the Matchmaker. At first I was beyond upset-I was actually appalled that two girls who had just moved into the district were chosen over me-hadn’t I payed my dues since 5th grade by being in every musical, participating in everything choral, and even going to school to be a music teacher? And then, something odd hit me. My friend of many years who was chosen for (what I thought was better at least) a better part than myself, backed out claiming that “she had every right to be the lead and don’t these morons know better” among other comments that weren’t so nice about the show’s potential success. Another student was filled into that slot and it really got me thinking-didn’t I audition for these musicals because I had had loads of fun and they were really the reason I had chosen the path for a career that I had?

It took me a few weeks, just like any other wound that we all often get as we grow, but, once rehearsals began, and I put on my shawl over my head for the first time to play that crazy coot of an old lady, I had found peace, and was actually having fun with the role that had been chosen for me. I think the biggest thing it taught me was another piece of compassion. Auditioning isn’t easy. People put themselves out there in hopes of furthering their experiences and having just a little bit more fun.

You are an A list actress, and could possibly pursue this later in life if you choose to do so. Don’t let it get you down, and, at the risk of sounding like Pollyanna, look for the good in the role you have (awesome costume for one!).

Chin up love, you’re one of the reasons I love my job so much!

The candlestick is still a really good part. I probably wouldn’t have gotten that good of a part! Bon travail!

Lumiere is a really good part! I’m love to play him if I got the chance! I experienced similar feelings when, in Alice in Wonderland, I got cast as the Dodo Bird! But I was happy, as it was a really fun part and I got both singing and speaking solos. I endured cheeky comments and came out confidant, all for the best. The only major slip-up was when I was late to come out! But now I laugh about it. I’m sure, if you strive for your personal best, you will be the best Lumiere there ever was.

    Dominique:

The lumiere is my favorite part of Beauty and the Beast! (maybe behind the cup and his mom, but that’s understandable, right?)

In 5th grade our play was Alice in Wonderland. I was cast as a dancer, and at first I was disappointed because our part was quickly monopolized by the seventh grader who was supervising us, but I had tons of fun with my friends!

Have fun in your musical! I know you’ll do great! (even though I don’t really know you, I’m sure you’ll be great because if you are as dedicated to it as you are to blogging, you be fantastic!)
